To raise your hand during class and ask a question between grades K–12 is a dangerous proposition for many kids. Asking means you don’t know something. Not knowing something exposes weakness. Exposing weakness among kids can be socially lethal. So most kids clam up, resulting in less being asked and learned. The same happens in professional situations. I consider myself a pretty connected guy. My job and the area I call home allow me to rub elbows with a host of interesting people — from presidents to plumbers. Yet with all the folks I know, so far no one, and that includes my banking friends, can unravel the mess that is college student loans. I’ve even seen this conundrum perplex CFOs of Fortune 500 companies. And the worst of it is, there doesn’t seem to be anyone interested in fixing it. I love coming up with crazy ideas as much as the next guy. That’s easy. What takes more effort (and guts) is coming up with viable ideas – ones that service a real need. Ones that will resonate with consumers. Ones that will generate buzz and bucks in the marketplace.

Back in the ’60s I watched Bewitched. I loved the premise of being married to someone who could produce anything out of thin air. But being a boy of grade school age, I never could relate to Darrin’s struggle to achieve his own success without help from Samantha’s witchiness. I thought he was a dope. Except in those scenes when he was pitching clients. His boss, Larry Tate, would refer to him as an “idea man.” I loved that phrase. It suited me. But is there such a thing as an “idea man/woman”? Are some folks really better at pulling unique solutions out of the thin air? read more » |
